Promoting the natural environment, biodiversity, historical architecture and village culture

Central Market hosted an exhibition of winning photos from the “Retaining the Past” photo competition. The competition aimed to promote the natural environment, biodiversity, historical architecture and village culture of remote countryside areas in Hong Kong.

Organised by the Countryside Conservation Office under the Environmental Protection Department, there were categories for primary and secondary students as well as a category for Hong Kong permanent residents with prizes of up to $10,000. Contestants could submit rural photos taken in Hong Kong anytime within this past year.

Photographs were judged based on 1) Relevancy, that is, the uniqueness of remote countryside areas, or record special country-side stories and moments; 2) Beauty, with a clear display of a remote countryside area; and 3) Creativity, via originality, aesthetic appeal or visual effects.

The competition received a response of nearly 700 submissions, ranging from stunning aerial views to golden hour reflective sunsets and community interactions, each depicting the uncommon beauty available in Hong Kong’s countryside.
