Streets and Alleys of the Western District

In this new serial, the art of the MTR system is featured, one line at a time. Within the Island Line are twenty-six permanent art installations at MTR stations. Some standout pieces worth stopping to admire include this one at HKU Station.

Stella So’s huge thirty-metre-long artwork animates the streets, alleys, shops, piers, bridges, buildings, and many people of Western District. The artwork demands closer investigation. Hundreds of characters engage in activities popular in this part of Hong Kong. People travel on foot, by car, tram, taxi, bus, scooter, rickshaw, boat, ferry, and bike. There is even a dragon boat. People are swimming, praying, playing, shopping, eating, celebrating, and just going about mundane tasks. Every window is a picture drawing us into shared experiences. The artwork reminds us of activities unique to Hong Kong and why so many people enjoy living here.
