Blooming Bud

In this new serial, the art of the MTR system is featured, one line at a time. Within the Island Line are twenty-six permanent art installations at MTR stations. Some standout pieces worth stopping to admire include this one at Kennedy Town Station.

Blooming Bud was a winning sculpture in a local 2012 public art competition to find a Kennedy Town Station centrepiece. Local artists Lao U-kei and Lau Kung-wah created this large-scale stainless steel and copper split apple. Although the sculpture is static, tourists and travellers can regularly be seen interacting and photographing it. The highly reflective surfaces act as a kaleidoscope as they capture the movement of people passing by. The silhouette figures where seeds should be, and the handprints on the apple’s skin encourage exploration and touching. Spending just twenty minutes people-watching will give you joy as new admirers discover what the sculpture has to offer.
