The heartbeat of the city

Many talk about the “pulse” of a city, its soul, as if these places are as alive as you or me. In a way, they’re not wrong. A complicated tapestry of culture, landscape, architecture, and society weaves itself into an otherworldly being that is a city’s spirit. Finding a moment alone is the best way to get in touch with this ethereal spirit. Difficult, yes. Impossible, some may say. Artists Ko Chi-Keung and Tang Ying-Chi would disagree. In their joint exhibition, Non-Place and The Place, each captures the city’s heartbeat in their mediums, exploring Hong Kong away from crowds in a liminal space that allows for true and deep self-reflection.

Using the concept of “Non-place” as a metaphor, Ko expresses his emotions through a series of black and white photographs of Hong Kong. Tang uses the traditional medium of ink to create her colourful work “The Place” as her anthem of freedom and individuality.
