I Love North Point, North Point is My Home

In this continuation of our serial, we examine how art promotes community, encourages art appreciation, and reminds people of their common shared experiences. These purposes are not core to the business of operating the MTR train system in Hong Kong, but the art on the Island Line do provide intrinsic value to the passenger experience.

I Love North Point, North Point is My Home is the brainchild of architect Tai Ho, who was also credited with designing the regional flag and emblem that Hong Kong adopted after the 1997 handover. This installation was a collaborative effort that began with local children’s drawings of different aspects of life and impressions of North Point. Ho then incorporated these drawings into the collages that now adorn the wall panels leading to Entrance A. While not high art, Ho’s artwork cheerfully celebrates the neighbourhood and unites the North Point community.
