From Alleyway to Gallery

HKwalls festival adds street art culture to the community of Sai Kung.

For several years, HKwalls organised annual week-long festivals for the creation of street art.

The festival brings together talented artists with blank walls and provide them with the opportunity to create outdoor murals during a week of active art creation. Artists painting at various streets and alleyways added a colourful and joyful vibe to Sai Kung, as it had done for other community around Hong Kong in past years.

Local artists descended on Sai Kung town centre to create twenty new murals. Each takes a couple of days to a week to complete.

Background information about street artists, their creative process and their inspiration was provided by the festival organisers as well as an opportunity to meet artists while they worked onsite.

The artists were still busy preparing and painting as we visited their walls, and so we were privileged to witness their progress.

Sai Kung is experiencing a rejuvenation as a direct result of street art adding colour and a new perspective. The community will benefit from the HKWalls festival. Organisers hope that residents and visitors will feel the exuberance and joy that the artists wish to convey with their murals.

Consider making a trip to Sai Kung to enjoy these new additions to Hong Kong’s street art culture.
