Solan Chiu conceptually-driven work focuses on sculpture and large-scale installation

The ceramics by Solan Chiu captivate with their playful fusion of ancient Chinese traditions and bold contemporary flair.

As the founder of Giant Year Gallery, she has helped shape Hong Kong’s ceramic scene, and now brings her dreamlike sculptures to Venice for Personal Structures.

A self-taught ceramic artist with more than four decades of practice, Solan Chiu draws on her Hong Kong roots and time in New Zealand to create a distinctive visual language. Her immersive installations explore memory, place, and material transformation.

By experimenting with unconventional tools, custom stamps, and varied glazes, Solan produces richly textured works in which surreal forms blur the boundary between dream and reality.

This approach is evident in Galloping Dreamscape, a striking installation of winged horses inspired by Tang Sancai, on view at Palazzo Mora as part of Personal Structures until 22 November 2026.

Venice Beckons: Personal Structures

Presented by Giant Year Gallery, Solan’s participation in the 8th edition of Personal Structures reflects the exhibition’s theme of cultural intersections in a rapidly changing world.

At Palazzo Mora, Galloping Dreamscape invites visitors into a visceral encounter, where horses seem liberated in motion, and the past speaks to the present.

The work also builds on Solan’s international exhibition history, including her 2019 Kafka series, and underscores her standing as an artist whose work has entered major collections, including the Macau Museum of Art, the Auckland Museum, and the World Bank.

Solan’s journey is one of resilience and reinvention: from childhood crafts that helped support her family to kiln firings that taught her to embrace cracks as part of the process.

Her advice remains simple and powerful: stay hungry, and keep reinventing.

If you are in Venice, make sure to visit Palazzo Mora and experience Solan Chiu’s extraordinary ceramic world in person.
